Running an ad is easy. Other marketing methods are more time-consuming. If you want your marketing to be easy, then advertising is about as easy as it's going to get. (Now there is a caveat to this one, because you can hire people to do some of those marketing tasks, such as updating Web sites, running PR campaigns, etc. However, not everything can be hired out so you still might be stuck spending time you don't have.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are you planning to test a new campaign or a new product/target market? Running small, inexpensive ads can be a good way to test certain marketing aspects before launching big, expensive, time-consuming campaigns. If you want to penetrate a new market or if you have a new product to launch or a new marketing message to try, buy some ads and see what the response rate is. Another strength of advertising is control -- you have total control over your test. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do other marketing approaches never quite measure up? It happens. Advertising in one or two specific media outlets seems to generate more sales and more leads then anything else you've tried. If that's the case, then don't mess with it. As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. &lt;br /&gt;Creativity Exercise -- Advertising and Your Business &lt;br /&gt;Is advertising right for your business? Try this exercise and see. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What's your biggest marketing challenge right now? Write it down. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Go through the above list of questions and ask yourself each one. Does it apply to your situation? If it does, write that down too. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do some brainstorming. In what ways can you use advertising to solve your marketing challenges? What media would work best? Online? Print? Radio? Television? Direct mail? Something else? Make up an ad for a variety of media. &lt;br /&gt;Now do the exact opposite. Think of ways advertising WON'T work for your business. Brainstorm at least 25 reasons why advertising won't work for your specific situation. Be silly. It's a good way to loosen you up. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Go back and reread both your pro and con lists. Now read your ads. Do you like what you came up with? I saw it over and over with myself last year. I get cloudy and I start struggling with my business. I'm clear and focused and my business is easy and effortless to run. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If I forget myself and allow myself to get distracted by whatever is going on (in other words, get in my "stuff"), then all of a sudden I find I've attracted a whole bunch of problems (or "issues") into my business. When I keep my focus on the positive and what I CAN control, then suddenly things get a lot better. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the lessons I learned is you should never stop working on your mindset. Even if it's only 5 minutes a day, just enough time to take some deep breaths and center yourself and maybe say a few affirmations, that can be the best thing you do for yourself AND your business. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's like an onion. Sadly, this was the most unfortunate lesson I had to learn in 2008. You know all those issues and blocks you work so hard to get through? Well, guess what -- they never actually go away. Yes, no matter how much you work on them and through them, they keep sticking around, just at a deeper level. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Sigh.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, I'm here to tell you this is a lifelong process. Don't beat yourself up over it, just accept it and keep working through them. And remember, even though it can get frustrating at times, the more you work on these things, the more you WILL see success at every breakthrough. The rewards are there if you're willing to do the work. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your habits are more important than you think. What do you do each day? Are you spending hours checking email and pushing paper around your desk? Do you find your days disappear and you look back and wonder what exactly did you get done? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've studied a lot of successful people, and one thing they all have in common is they have pretty rock-solid habits. They get up early; they make time to read, exercise, work on their mindset, etc. Yes, they might not always get everything done on their to-do list, but every day they're working toward the bigger picture. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I made a point this year of dumping old habits of working that no longer served me and starting new habits. Now, I'm going to admit I'm not perfect yet. Some of my old habits still creep back now and then. And it wasn't easy (I broke habits I had for years.) But, it was worth it. I'm more productive than I've been in years; but even more importantly, I'm more relaxed, calm, and at peace than I've ever been. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What habits do you need to break? Do you numb yourself with too much television, Internet surfing or some other distraction? Do you find yourself sucked into drama or gossip? Or maybe you just waste time doing things in your business you could hire a virtual assistant for half (or less) of your hourly rate? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And what habits should you be doing? Journaling? Reading? Exercising? Meditating? Eating healthier? Once you start replacing your old habits with new, healthier ones, you'll probably be amazed at what starts to happen in your life. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Get the right people on the right seats on the bus. Building a team, and making sure the team is the right one for you, is crucial. You can't do it alone. You need people around you to support you and do the work you have no business doing. But you need to make sure it's the right team for you. And don't be afraid to make changes -- sometimes the team that was right for you three years ago is no longer right for where you are now. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When your team is clicking, it's a great feeling. The work is getting done, you know you're supported, and it takes such a huge burden off of you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't be afraid to give up control. The smartest thing I did this year was give up control of the operations of the business to my husband. If you're anything like me, you're not the best person to be running the operations. You should be focused on the vision and leadership of the company, plus the other aspects you're good at. The details of whose doing what and is it getting done is probably not your strong suit. That's why, after you've grown to a certain level, you need to take yourself out of that role. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, you might not have a spouse who can handle the operations, and if that's the case I encourage you to look for an operations manager. While it might feel like a big leap, it's an amazing freeing feeling. I only want to sell to this specific customer; I'm not interested in attracting anyone else. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Or &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2) If they have a pulse, they're a potential customer. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Okay, in case you were wondering, number 1 is good and number 2 isn't. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yet, I can't tell you how many business owners I run into who are closer to number 2 than number 1. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know, it's difficult to think you might be turning away potential business. But trust me, your life will be much easier once you've carefully defined your potential customer (also known as your target market). And to further convince you, here are 3 reasons. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. You'll be able to find your target market more easily. If you know exactly who you're looking for, you'll have a much easier time tracking down where they're hanging out (i.e. publications they read, Web sites they visit, radio stations they listen to). Then you'll know exactly where you should be spending your advertising dollars and/or which editors you should be courting for potential PR stories. Best yet, you'll probably be spending less money/time and yielding far better results. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. You'll be able to persuade your target market more easily. If you know exactly who you're talking to, and what their challenges and problems are, you'll be able to craft far more targeted marketing materials. You can use language and images they respond to (which will make them feel like you understand them) plus you'll be able provide a specific solution to their challenges. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can't do this if you're trying to please "everyone." "Everyone" is a tricky fellow. He's tough to pin down. After all, "everyone" buys a product for different reasons. Take cell phones, for instance. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Senior citizens, teenagers and parents buy cell phones, but they buy them for different reasons. Teenagers buy them so they can chat with their friends all the time. Parents buy them for their teens in order to keep track of them (the teens, not the cell phones). My 90-year-old grandfather bought one for emergency use only. Each one of those reasons is a different benefit. The ad that appeals to parents knowing where their teenagers are is certainly NOT going to work for teenagers, and neither of those ads will be terribly persuasive to my grandfather. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So if you're trying to sell to "everyone" just imagine how complicated it's going to be to try and cover all those different reasons in a single marketing piece. Not really possible, is it? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. You'll have an easier time with your business. If you're busy running around providing different products or services to different customers, chances are you're not as efficient as you could be. This is especially true for business owners who are service providers. If you're constantly learning new skills for each client who walks in the door, how efficient will you be? Wouldn't it be better to stick with what you're good at and just sell that? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Creativity Exercise -- Discover your target market. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here's an exercise you can try if you're still unsure of your target market or if you want to make sure you aren't missing any potential customers. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Get a sheet of paper. Write down all the features of your product. Features are descriptions of your product. Take cell phones, for example. Features of cell phones are they're small and wireless. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now change those features to benefits. For a cell phone, you can carry it anywhere and use it anywhere (anywhere there's a signal, that is). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now make a list of who needs those benefits. Think broadly here. Maybe parents or people in certain industries or people with certain jobs. Try to come up with at least 50 markets. Be silly. That's when you're most likely to hear your muse (or genius) speaking to you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another technique is to ask your subconscious for help. Do a meditation where you ask your subconscious to show you someone from your target market. Ask questions and see what the answers are. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once you come up with your list, then it's time to critique and judge. Try and narrow it to no more than five target markets. One or two are better yet. The more target markets, the harder it gets. Never fear, help is here. &lt;br /&gt;Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) many marketing challenges can be traced back to a handful of marketing mistakes. Today, I'll talk about the top 5 marketing mistakes business owners make. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Too broad a target market (who you're selling your product or service to). If I ask you who your customer is and you answer "anyone with a pulse," then I'm talking to you. &lt;br /&gt;Even if your product or service CAN help just about anyone on the planet, not everyone is going to buy it. They don't have the money or the interest or whatever. And when you try and target everyone, you really end up targeting no one. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The way to start making money (not to mention getting better results with your marketing) is to narrow your target market so you're only talking to one specific group. However, there are pitfalls with that as well, as we see in the next mistake. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The wrong target market. This happens when you've chosen the wrong target market. What do I mean by wrong target market? They either aren't interested in buying your product or service or they don't have the money. &lt;br /&gt;Let's look at the first one, lack of interest. What happens here is the word "need" is misused. "I know my target market needs this, therefore they'll buy it." Not so. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This happens a lot with people in the health and wellness field and it typically goes something like this. You are passionate about teaching yoga and you want to reach committed couch potatoes. Do committed couch potatoes need to be doing yoga? No question. Do they want to be doing yoga? Probably not or they wouldn't be committed couch potatoes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So let's look at the second one, lack of funds. This happens when you're going after a customer base that desperately wants what you're selling but can't afford it. For instance, a high-end spa targeting low-income single mothers. Would this target market adore the stress relieving benefits of a day at a spa? No doubt. Can they afford it? Probably not. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, that example is obvious, but it's not always so cut and dried. Especially with service professionals. Business and life coaches for instance. They're so passionate about what they do and they want to see people succeed; they go after a target market that may really want and need their services, but they can't afford them. So these coaches lower their fees or coach for free or trade out (even if they aren't interested in the trade) or something else that isn't terribly helpful to their own business success. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bottom line -- make sure you choose a target market that not only can afford your product or service but also wants it. (Desperate for it is better yet.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Looking for your target market in all the wrong places. This is a situation where "build it and they will come" doesn't work. Once you know who your target market is, you need to go to them. And you shouldn't waste your time in places where you won't find them. Let's say your target market is Fortune 500 companies. Is hobnobbing at your local Chamber of Commerce going to pay off for you? Probably not. But buying a targeted list and putting together a direct mail campaign? Much better idea. &lt;br /&gt;Or, for instance, a friend of mine just realized a new niche target market she was going after doesn't spend much time online. And, you guessed it, she does most of her marketing online. So, she either has to change her niche market or change how she markets to them. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once you've selected a viable target market, make sure you're putting your marketing time and dollars into places where they hang out. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not a compelling message. Okay, you know you've got a good target market and you know how to reach them. But you're still not getting any results. Now the problem might be your message. &lt;br /&gt;People have a lot of choices on where to spend their money. You have to give them a very compelling reason why they should spend their hard earned money with you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here's where it makes sense to brush up on your copywriting skills (writing promotional copy) or hire someone to write your copy for you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not getting in front of your target market often enough. So you've run one ad. Or mailed one postcard. Or attended one networking event. And the work isn't pouring in the door. &lt;br /&gt;Hmmm... &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's a sad fact that you need to consistently get in front of your target market time and time again. Unfortunately, for the most part, your target market won't wake up and say "Gee, I have to give so-and-so some money today" without some encouragement on your part. Remember, it's not your target market's job to remember you. It's fine to include sales offers up to 10 percent of the time, but make sure you are primarily serving up useful content. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Use compelling titles and descriptions. You only have a limited amount of space to share information which means that a good title can make the difference between a reader who clicks through or completely ignores your post. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Track your results. Pay attention to user response. If you're receiving comments and your content is being forwarded to others (for example, retweeting on Twitter), that is evidence that your efforts are working. In 1995, I landed in Mumbai with Rs 50,000 with which I had to find a house and an office space. What I did find were some generous relatives who offered me an empty flat for a nominal rent in one of Mumbai’s far-flung suburbs. I then managed to rent a two-seater office in Mumbai’s financial district, Nariman Point, for Rs 5,000 a month. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had learnt from my “Ask Me” days that I had to have a phone number for my service that was very easy to remember. In 1996, the Kandivili Telephone Exchange in Mumbai was coming out with its new 888 series. I thought 888 8888 would be the easiest to remember. I spoke to the general manager and told him about my idea. He liked the presentation and assigned me the number. That was a huge leg up for me. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In those days, a phone line used to cost Rs 15,000 under OYT, or else, you had to wait for a few years. I didn’t have Rs 15,000 so we applied by paying Rs 3,000 and we got the number a year later! When I got the number, I didn’t have enough capital to start. We finally started Just Dial in a small 3x5 feet garage, with the number 888 8888, some borrowed furniture, rented PCs and a capital of Rs 50,000! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While I was waiting for my magic number, I had begun collecting names and telephone numbers of small and medium-sized companies through a team of data collectors. There was a lot of raw data available but this needed to be validated. I got a team of telemarketing executives to validate this data. I managed to convince some establishments to be my sponsored clients by paying a flat fee. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As time went by, the number of sponsored clients multiplied. That model then gave way to a premium fee model where sponsored clients paid a sum according to the category of their products and services. We then introduced lead-based payments, where a client pays according to the number of customers he gets through Just Dial. Today Just Dial draws from a database of three million establishments - of which 100,000 are sponsored - to feed information to callers. Even though we make money based on leads, we have never ever given out our database to telemarketers. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From the start, three things worked in our favour. What brand do you think of when you hear the words "Just do it"? &lt;br /&gt;Branding is a powerful tool in our business lives. While Nike and Xerox are prime examples of this idea, all businesses can benefit from branding. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The key factor in branding is this: on the most basic level, the level where clients live and work, your company is represented by a person. In your business that person may be you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is a seven step formula that will give you a great start toward establishing yourself as the brand of choice. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Know where you stand now. What name pops into your customer's mind when they need what you do? If it's not your name, why not? Do you have a name or slogan that is easy to remember and clearly describes what you offer? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Know where you want to go. What do you want to be known for? Like it or not, customers will define us if we don't define ourselves. Do you want to be the low-price leader? Do you want to be the value-added vendor? We can't (as much as we might like to) be everything to everyone. Choose a theme for your business and promote that theme at every opportunity. Soon, you will become associated with the ONE benefit that is your strong suit. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Narrow your niche. Be such an expert in your field that you are the natural choice to call when what you do becomes what they need. Marketing, either offline or online, creates the greatest impact when it frames YOU as the only smart solution to a client's problem.v &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Give away some work. If giving away your expertise means increasing your exposure, strongly consider it. You are BUILDING a reputation. There is nothing wrong or manipulative in trading work for exposure, rather than cash. Sometimes a good word from an influential customer pays bigger dividends than the best advertising. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Be everywhere at once. Oh, if only wishing made it so. The Internet can get you close. If you market online, participate in several question and answer forums or newsgroups where decision makers and people of influence hang out. Choose your answers very carefully, but answer every question you can, always bringing home the message that you are the best choice. If you market offline, consider adjusting your budget to have a presence in each medium (TV, radio, print, billboard) to reach the widest possible audience. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Listen and follow up. If you give your product or service (or even advice) to someone, follow up to see how it worked out. Be brief and humble, but follow up to make sure you are on the mark. When you do this you not only evaluate the quality of what you have given, you have an excellent opportunity to see how it effects real people in the real world. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This should have been the first point, but make sure you KNOW your stuff. NOTHING can replace the good will you create when you do your very best work for every client or friend. &lt;br /&gt;If you really know your stuff, and are willing to invest some time, you can become the natural choice for solving problems that arise in your field. Internet</title><content type='html'>As an IT Professional and a website designer I talk with many companies and small businesses about the importance of advertising and marketing on the internet. It is still to my surprise how many businesses are weary of spending the money on creating a website for online advertising. Before we move any further let's be clear about one thing. Online advertising is an incredibly low cost, low maintenance option that businesses have available. It is shocking to me how much businesses will spend monthly to be listed in multiple phone books for the same circulation area. I have several customers that have admitted to me that they spend at least $300 per month per phone book for a small two inch square space. These businesses are listed in three phone books and are spending about $900 dollars a month in phone book advertising that in today's society most people just throw away. However, after the initial setup of the website which can cost from $500 and up (for a good design), the monthly maintenance cost is extremely low in comparison. For domain registration and website hosting you should expect to pay between $50 and $100 per year in addition to any monthly maintenance or updating fee you may pay to a web design or SEO company. With the advances in today's technology phone books are becoming less of research tool and more of a paper weight while the internet increasingly becomes a point of reference for information for people. Now please be aware I am not advocating pulling all of your advertising out of phone books and investing solely in the internet, just carefully consider weighing the options. You might find that you can reduce your print advertising a very small portion and be able to afford a low maintenance website.
